GOUVERNEUR — John Robert "Bob" McNeill, 84, a lifelong resident of Gouverneur, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at his home.
Bob graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1943 and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps as a mechanic, serving during WW II and the Korean conflict.
He began working at B.O. Kinney, Inc. at the age of 14 and was employed there for 12 years. He eventually became manager of the soda fountain and was in charge of making ice cream for all 7 stores. He was also employed at the A&P Store as manager of the dairy counter and at the Bank of Gouverneur before he became self employed as a home decorator and restorer. Bob eventually owned several rental properties in the community, and in 1984, he received a complimentary letter from then mayor, Curran E. Wade, for being a conscientious and exemplary landlord. He was an active member of Gouverneur B.P.O.E. Lodge #2035, serving as treasurer and inner guard. He also belonged to the Gouverneur Luncheon Club and the Gouverneur American Legion where he received the 1984 Legionnaire of the Year Award. Though his own needs were modest, he was extraordinarily generous to his family and friends.
Bob was born May 22, 1925, the son of Grant and Anna Mason McNeill. He grew up surrounded by his aunts and uncles of the Mason family and his one cousin Jim Mason.
Mr. McNeill is survived by a sister Martha and Leopold Protomastro of Albuquerque, NM, two nephews Kevin Richardson of Troy, Timothy and Stacey Richardson of Houston, TX, a niece Audrey Michelle Richardson Ling of Woodstock, GA, and his partner Joe Fowler of Gouverneur.
