DEATHS
October 31, 2002 By Sara Sheckler, Sentinel Correspondent
EUSTIS -- So sharp were the golfing skills of Montreal native Richard Pilatzke that when he played in golfing tournaments in the city of his birth he often captured top honors.
"He loved to golf. He played golf all over the United States," his wife, Virginia, said.
He brought his fondness for the sport with him when he moved from Albany, N.Y., to Eustis in 1981.
Richard Pilatzke, a 21-year member of Pine Meadows Golf and Country Club in Eustis and a former director of the club, died Monday in Leesburg after a long illness. He was 85.
Born July 1, 1917, he and his wife were married in Tavares Jan. 25, 1982.
They met through a mutual friend in Daytona Beach, but after visiting with each other, Virginia went back to her home in Syracuse and Richard returned home to Albany.
"Then one day soon after, he just showed up at my house," his wife said.
The couple were married not long after his surprise visit.
Pilatzke was a flight engineer for the Royal Canadian Air Force for about 6 years during World War II. "He'd transport the planes from Canada to England," his wife said.
A typesetter for the Albany (N.Y.) Times-Union, Pilatzke retired after working there for 20 years.
His wife recalled his offbeat sense of humor.
"You never knew when he serious and when he was joking. He'd always say, `If you can't have any fun in life what 's the reason for living?' " she said.
"He liked to play jokes and watch how people reacted."
Pilatzke was a member of Eustis Elks Lodge 1578.
Other survivors are sons, Richard Pilatzke of Littleton, Colo. and Robert Pilatzke of Schenectady, N.Y.; stepson, J. Clayton Liljequist of Mendon, N.Y.; daughters, Carol Lorch of Willis, Texas, Cheryl Wise of Syracuse, N.Y. and Jane Donnelly of Clifton Park, N.Y.; stepdaughter, Suzanne Lower of Norwich, Conn.; sister, Sheila MacMillan of West Seneca, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Hamlin and Hilbish Funeral Directors in Eustis is handling arrangements.
