GOUVERNEUR — John Robert "Bob" McNeill, 84, a lifelong resident of Gouverneur, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at his home.
Bob graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1943 and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps as a mechanic, serving during WW II and the Korean conflict.
He began working at B.O. Kinney, Inc. at the age of 14 and was employed there for 12 years. He eventually became manager of the soda fountain and was in charge of making ice cream for all 7 stores. He was also employed at the A&P Store as manager of the dairy counter and at the Bank of Gouverneur before he became self employed as a home decorator and restorer. Bob eventually owned several rental properties in the community, and in 1984, he received a complimentary letter from then mayor, Curran E. Wade, for being a conscientious and exemplary landlord. He was an active member of Gouverneur B.P.O.E. Lodge #2035, serving as treasurer and inner guard. He also belonged to the Gouverneur Luncheon Club and the Gouverneur American Legion where he received the 1984 Legionnaire of the Year Award. Though his own needs were modest, he was extraordinarily generous to his family and friends.
Bob was born May 22, 1925, the son of Grant and Anna Mason McNeill. He grew up surrounded by his aunts and uncles of the Mason family and his one cousin Jim Mason.
Mr. McNeill is survived by a sister Martha and Leopold Protomastro of Albuquerque, NM, two nephews Kevin Richardson of Troy, Timothy and Stacey Richardson of Houston, TX, a niece Audrey Michelle Richardson Ling of Woodstock, GA, and his partner Joe Fowler of Gouverneur. He is predeceased by a sister Helen McNeill.
A funeral mass will be held today, Saturday, August 15, 2009, at 1:00 pm at St. James Church, Gouverneur with Fr. Stephen Rocker officiating. Burial will be at a later date in New St. James Cemetery, Gouverneur. Arrangements are with Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Mrs. Anna Calnon
The funeral for Mrs. Anna
McNeiil Calnon, 76, of 24 Gleason
street, was held Friday at St.
James Church with Very Rev.
Msgr. Robert J. McCarthy,
pastor, officiating. Burial was in
the new St. James cemetery.
Mrs. Calnon, widow of Daniel
Calnon, died Oct. 19 at her home.
She had been hospitalized
recently.
Surviving are two daughters,
Miss Helen Elizabeth Mc-
Neill, Dewitt, Mrs. Loren
(Martha) Richardson, Seneca
Falls; a son, John Robert,
Gouverneur; three grand*
children; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth
Mason, and a nephew, James
Mason, both of Gouverneur.
Born at Gouverneur June 14,
1895, daughter of Patrick J. and
Anna Clark Mason, she attended
Gouverneur High School and
local training Class and taught in
Wegatchie and Morristown
schools. She was married to
Grant McNeill in 1921 at
Gouverneur.
The couple operated the Mc-
Neil farm at Depeyster for years,
then moved to Gouverneur where
he worked as a private contractor
until his death Dec. 26, 1955.
Mrs. McNeill later married
Daniel Calnon at Gouverneur St.
James Church, Rev. Msgr.
James Lyng officiating. Mr.
Calnon was a retired postmaster
and supervisor of the Town of
Depeyster. Since Mr. Calnon's
death, she had lived at
Gouverneur.
She was a member of St. James
Church.
