Leslie M. Hamilton Jr., 78, of Peru, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at the Illinois Veteran's Home in LaSalle.
Arrangements are through Mueller Funeral Home in Peru.
Les was born May 31, 1933 in Fall River, MA to Leslie M. and Gertrude (Dauphinias) Hamilton. He married Susanne Mingle on January 1, 1969 in Maryville, TN.
Mr. Hamilton was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served as a radioman during the Korean War on a P2V antisubmarine aircraft. He was stationed in Hawaii and Japan and flew to most of the Navy airfields in the Pacific. After discharge from the service in 1957, he worked with the Lockheed Aircraft Service Company in Hawaii. For almost 10 years, he worked at night and attended the University of Hawaii during the day. Two of his classmates were the mother and father of President Obama. In 1968, he moved to Tennessee to attend the University of Tennessee full time. He met his wife, Susanne during final exams for his Bachelor Degree and they were soon married. Susanne was a Registered Nurse and she worked while Les took classes for his Master's Degree. In 1970, he finished his MS Degree and took a job at Illinois Valley Community College teaching Electronic Technology while his wife worked at St. Margaret's Hospital. He retired in 1995. Survivors include two daughters, Jane H. (Dan) Benz of Ft. Leavenworth, KS and Claire H. (Steve) Marko of Portland, OR ; three grandchildren, Peachey and Magnus Benz and Nora Marko; a brother Robert Hamilton of Knoxville, TN and a sister Geraldine Dickman of Savanah TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Susanne on January 27, 2009.
