      Master Sergeant, 105th Inf, NYNG. Activated in 1940. Served first at Fr. McClellan, AL.

      Commissioned 2LT, at Ft Benning, 14 Nov 1942. Received 2 wks leave immediately after, visiting home, then was to report to Ascadero, CA, by 29 Nov 1942.

      Apparently then assigned to 114th Inf, deploying to ETO with that unit as part of the 44th Infantry Division, 7th US Army.

      The 44th Infantry Division landed in France via Cherbourg, 15 September 1944, and trained for a month before entering combat, 18 October 1944, when it relieved the 79th Division

      Notes on the burial information: 4 December 1944 - Hochfelden temporary cemetery opened - closed on 20 December 1944 - reopened in January 1945 to receive the remains of men who fell during the German Counteroffensive - reclosed on 18 February 1945. Per http://www.geocities.com/pentagon/barracks/1267/ww2/ww2tc.html. On October 1, 1947, Congress authorized the disinterment and final burial of the heroic dead of World War II. The family chose to have him permanently interred in a United States Military Cemetery overseas, so his final resting place is in St. Avold (France) U.S. Military Cemetery.       From the letter to his widow:
      "The regiment was attacking a town called Volksburg. It was a strongly held place located on high ground and was difficult to take. Our first assault was beaten back. Donnelly was hit with small arms fire and instantly killed while leading this attack. He fell nearest the town of any of our men. We continued the attack and finally took the town about dark. Our dead are buried in the Central American Cemetery near Lunville.
      All the officers and men who knew him felt a deep personal loss which far exceeded that shown for anyone else before or since. No one could have shown more courage or leadership."
