Bill Stanton, barnstormer, and product designer, dies

Bill Stanton, 79, of Glen Lake, who once barnstormed the Midwest in a J-5 Stearman biplane and later helped design products for companies throughout the country, died of cancer July 19 at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
Stanton, a native of Troy, N.Y., was known as "Long Island's Kid Flyer" when he learned to fly at age 16 at New York's Roosevelt Field, said his wife, Norma.
He and wing-walker Larry Moore toured the country performing flying stunts. He also flew mail to Canada and Alaska.
Stanton worked for aircraft companies in New York and Pennsylvania and owned Jacques Brass, a subcontracting company in Baltimore that made aircraft parts.
In 1957, he moved to Minneapolis to work for Honeywell, where he helped design a part for early spacecraft.
He later became a freelance engineer and helped design a potato-chip machine for General Mills, packing bags for Cargill, streetcars for San Francisco's transit system, square orange-juice containers, mining equipment and many other products.
Besides his wife, he is survived by sons Pat, John and Greg, all of Minneapolis. Services were private.
