Elma Jean (Michieli) Huss, 78, passed away peacefully on Sunday Feb. 1, 2015 at Fairfax Nursing Center in Fairfax, VA. Her three children were with her that weekend. Elma was under the care of Capital Caring Hospice and had been battling cancer since Sep. 2012.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at St. Henry Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at Anderson Funeral Home with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.andersonfhs.com. Elma Huss was born on March 4, 1936, near Sterling, Colorado. She was the youngest of four children born to Toby and Carrie Michieli of Sterling. Elma graduated from Sterling High School in 1954, and received a scholarship to attend Mount St. Scholastica College for women (now Benedictine College), Atchison, Kansas. She graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor's Degree in Teaching. While in college, she served as the President of the Dramatic Arts Department and played the lead in many college plays. Holy Name Parish, Omaha, Nebraska, hired her upon graduation to teach elementary school. In addition to teaching school, Elma was involved in the Omaha Children's Theater and directed and played the lead in many productions.
It was in Omaha where she met her husband of 49 years, Gerald "Jerry" Louis Huss, when both played the lead male and female roles at a Kingsmark Theater, Sheraton-Fontenelle Hotel, production of the play, "Dear Delinquent."
Jerry and Elma married on Jan. 30, 1960, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Sterling, Colo. In 1961, Jerry took a job in the Science Department in the Ocheyedan Community School District where he taught science courses for three years and Elma taught elementary school in the same school district. Jerry and Elma then returned to the State College of Iowa (University of Northern Iowa) where Jerry earned his Master of Arts in Education in 1964.
Upon graduation, Jerry and Elma moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, where Elma lived from 1964 until May, 2012. While in Marshalltown, Elma taught elementary school and worked at Seifert's, a clothing store, where she earned the top sales person of the year for the state of Iowa. She then spent 30 years working as a consultant and independent sales director for Mary Kay Cosmetics, focusing primarily on the Marshalltown area, Lake Okoboji, Cedar Falls, Waterloo and Iowa Falls. She won numerous leadership and sales awards in Mary Kay and felt that one of her greatest talents was "to make women feel their best."
Elma devoted her entire life to her family, friends and anyone in need. For example, Elma started a high school youth group that volunteered at a local hospital. Elma thoroughly enjoyed being around people and said one of her greatest joys was having a home where "the door was always open and the coffee pot was always on." She was actively involved in Catholic Church activities and school activities. In May 2012, she moved to Virginia to live with her daughter, Jo-Ellen (Huss) Adkins and her family.
Elma is survived by: her children, Patrick Jude Huss of Minneapolis, Minn.; Tobias Edward Huss of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Jo-Ellen (Huss) Adkins of Annandale, VA. Jerry and Elma have five grandchildren: Tate and Sawyer Huss of Minneapolis; Charlotte Huss of Los Angeles; and Michael and Carolyn Adkins of Annandale. She is also survived by her three brothers and sisters: Rudy Michieli of Sterling; Mary Rollins of Houston, Texas; and Ronald Michieli of Sterling.
She will be rejoined with her deceased husband, Jerry Huss, and her parents, Toby and Carrie Michieli.
Funeral services were held for Elma J. Huss, 78, of Sterling, Colorado, formerly of Marshalltown, Wednesday, February 11, 2014, at St. Henry Catholic Church with Father Don Czapla and Deacon Ronald Michieli officiating. Organist was Sherman Botts with vocalist, Emily Botts and flutist, Therese Botts Sizer.
Pallbearers were Patrick Huss, Toby Huss, Michael Adkins, Dean Adkins, Tom Rollins, Frankie Huss, Tyrone Michieli and John Blake.
A group of Mary Kay consultants from Marshalltown were in attendance.
Elma was laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown.
Anderson Funeral Homes was entrusted with the arrangements.
