Charles Atkinson
Funeral service for Charles Atkinson, 81, Audubon Avenue, DeLeon Springs, who died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 319 W. Wisconsin Ave., DeLand, with the Rev. Don Lyon officiating. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery. Visiting hours are from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, DeLand.
Mr. Atkinson was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and moved to DeLand in 1987 from Jacksonville, N.C. He worked in communications. He was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, American Legion Post 6 and Lake Beresford Yacht Club, all in DeLand. He retired from the Marine Corps after serving 31 years as a Master Gunnary Sergeant. He fought in three wars and received five Purple Hearts.
He was predeceased by Mary Ellen Chessel Atkinson.
Survivors include his wife, Lilyan E. Atkinson, DeLeon Springs; daughters, Karen Atkinson and Margie Atkinson, Jacksonville; stepdaughters, Jeanne Jenrzejewski, Baton Rouge, La., and Suzanne Fox, El Sobrante, Calif.; sister, Geraldine Beechey, Blairsville, Ga.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations suggested to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.
