Michigan, USA
Death: Aug. 23, 2016
Gladwin

Michigan, USA
Helen Jean Carey passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Gladwin Nursing and Rehabilitation Community, Gladwin, Michigan. Helen, the last child of Manson Elias and Delilah Pearl (Mills) Carey was born on May 5, 1924 in Hope, Michigan.
She attended the Hope School until the tenth grade then went to Beaverton Rural Agricultural School to finish her education, where she earned her diploma on May 21, 1942. Helen worked for her stepfather, Walter Mason in the Hope Mercantile Store until, she, her mother, stepfather and uncle, Devere (Pete) Mills moved to Atlanta, Michigan in 1948.
Ms. Carey worked as a clerk for the Peterson General Store until it was sold in 1974. Her stepfather and uncle had purchased the Gulf Station in Atlanta in 1948 and was known as Mason and Mills. They sold it in 1962 and purchased the old County Road Commission building and started Mason and Mills Auto Parts. Pete died in January of 1970, but Walt continued to run the business and Helen joined him in 1974. Gordon Cady joined in 1972 and in 1975, they opened a store in Lewiston. Helen worked in the Atlanta store and retired in 1994, having sold the business to Gordon.
Helen was a trustee for the Chamber of Commerce for many years and enjoyed doing volunteer work and helping at the Elk Festivals. She was a people person and was happiest when involved in community and church activities. She had a great passion for playing bingo and passing out Life Savers Wintergreen candies and Russell Stover Chocolates.
Helen was a member of the Hillman Methodist Church and a Sunday morning greeter until health issues caused her to move to the Gladwin area in 2008. Helen was a very caring and generous lady. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A large thank you goes out to the staff at the Gladwin Nursing and Rehabilitation Community for all the care and love bestowed upon her while in their facility.
