The second child of Timothy and Alice (Purcell) Delaney. He grew up in the Cobleskill area. There on March 23, 1870 he married Myra M. Cross of Leesville. They had four children: Edward J., Charles T., Stanley G., and Myra E. In 1881 the family lived in Warnersville, Schoharie Co., NY with the surname of Delaney. They had an auction and were to move to Troy to operate a livery stable. About 1885 they appear in the Town of Lebanon, Madison Co., NY with the surname of Purcell, which is the maiden name of Edward's mother. The reason for the surname change is probably due to alleged criminal activities. Edward and his family were farmers in the Eaton area.

Daughter of Timothy and Alice Purcell Delaney. Wife of Peter J. McCarthy. Mother of Delia B. Nelson, Alice E. Lehmann, Peter J. McCarthy Jr., Catherine A. Jones, Frank J. McCarthy, Anna Norton Stapleton, William J. McCarthy, and David J. McCarthy. She passed away suddenly at age 36 of acute Bright's disease.

From the Troy (NY) Daily Times dated 8/28/1899: Watervliet section - "Mrs. Peter McCarthy died this morning at the family residence, 2332 Third avenue. She is survived by her husband, Peter McCarthy, eight children and three sisters, Mrs. John Mace and Mrs. Timothy Luddy, of Watervliet, and Mrs. John McCauley of Troy."

From the Oneida (NY) Post dated 9/2/1899: "Died In (*West) Troy. On Monday a telegram was received announcing the death in Troy(*West Troy = Watervliet) of Mrs. Kate McCarthy, sister of P. H. Delaney of this village and a former resident of Oneida. Mrs. McCarthy was about 35 years old and besides her husband and mother she leaves eight children surviving her, two brothers, one half brother (*error - full brother, Edward Delaney Purcell, who changed his name) and three sisters. Funeral services were held in (*West) Troy Thursday morning and were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Delaney of this village and Mr. and Mrs. Purcell of Eaton."
