John E Powers
Birth: 1823
New York, USA
Death: Aug. 9, 1880
Janesville
Rock County
Wisconsin, USA
from the Janesville Daily Gazette:
After suffering a trying illness which extended over several months past, John E. Powers breathed his last about 1 o'clock this afternoon. The sad event was expected, and yet it seems hardly less sad. For several days it has been evident that he could not live, and for hours the end was expected momentarily, and yet at times his sufferings were so great that death seemed like a rest to be longed for. During most of his illness he has not been confined to the bed, the disease seeming to be mainly confined to the brain, but since last Sunday he had been very weak, and growing more so daily.
Mr. Powers was so well known here that it seems almost needless to speak of his life to those to those who have been thrown in almost daily contact with him for years past. He came to this city about 1852, from New York State, and has lived here ever since, and been actively engaged in business here. He was about the first daguerrean here, showing skill, and meeting with success in the business. About 1857 he became interested in stage routes, and soon gave his time and attention to that, and soon began contracting for the mail service, and for many years has made that his business, being a very large mail contractor, and running many stage routes in this part of the country.
He was a man of big heart and great hospitality. None enjoyed the companionship of friends, none were more free too offer his hospitalities of home than he, and with his jovial nature and fund of mirth he was always gladly welcomed by any circle. In business he was enterprising and stirring. and in his personal habits he was free from any dissipation. He will be missed not merely by those of his own household, but by scores of old friends and acquaintances who will find it hard indeed to realize that John Powers is no more.
He leaves a wife and two daughters, one the wife of J.L. Croft, of this city, and the other the wife of Charles De Berand of Norwood Park, Ill. To these sorrowing ones the sympathies of many will be extended.
