Rowland was the son of Ray Lee Rowland (1879 - 1935) and Mabel Emma Manning (1881 - 1947). He married Catherine Owens on 26 December 1946 at St. Bridges Catholic Church in Midland, Michigan. He descends from the family of Benjamin F. Sheldon (1791 - 1870) - veteran of the War of 1812 - and Lovisa Rice (1796 -1870) who migrated their family from New York to Lorain County, Ohio, in approximately 1848. His Sheldon lineage is first found in his maternal grandparents Elvin Alexis Manning and Jessie Emma Sheldon. Her parents, James Sheldon (7th child of Benjamin & Lovisa, above) and Adeline West were known for their production of fine cheeses in the Wellington, Ohio, area in the later 1800's according to a number of historical newspaper accounts.
