"Mrs. Connors Dies at Age of 91 Years" (Nov. 14, 1935 paper)
"Beloved Resident of Ludington Expires Wednesday Night"
Ludington is again called upon to mourn the death of one of its beloved pioneer residents, Mrs. Patrick Connors, who passed away at her home, 303 West Court Street at 8:15 Wednesday night.
Mrs. Connors, who was 91 years of age, had been failing in health for six weeks and bedridden the past two weeks, during which time she was cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Maude Fitzgerald of Ashland, Wis. Death was caused by complications of old age.
Remained Active
In spite of her advanced age, Mrs. Connors had been exceptionally active, caring for her household duties until recent weeks.
Mary Elizabeth Porter was born in Lockport, Canada, July 4, 1844. When she was six years old, she went to Muskegon with her parents, three brothers and sisters. Shortly afterwards her mother died. She remained in Muskegon until she was eight years old, at that time being taken into the family of Dr. George Phillips who lived at the Claybanks, near Pentwater. She went to work in Muskegon at the age of 14 and Sept. 15, 1859, was married to Reuben Hollingsworth of Pentwater.
The young couple established their home in Pentwater, where they remained until 1861, when the husband went to the Dakotas to work in the harvest fields and during which time Mrs. Hollingsworth cooked in a hotel at Pentwater. Shortly afterward they came to Ludington to reside. After the death of her husband in 1866, Mrs. Hollingsworth supported herself and children by cooking in the lumber camps. Five years later she was united in marriage with Patrick Connors and the couple had since resided in Ludington.
Annual Gathering
A happy event in the life of Mrs. Connors was the family gathering each year on her birthday anniversary, July 4, when members of the family came to celebrate the occasion.
Mrs. Connors was a devout member of St. Simon's Roman Catholic church.
Surviving are the husband, Patrick Connors, a daughter, Mrs. Maude Fitzgerald of Ashland, Wis., and a son, Charles Hollingsworth of Scottville; six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
The body, which was removed to Morrison mortuary, will be taken to the home this afternoon. Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Saturday morning from St. Simon's church with interment in Lakeview cemetery.
Father is William Porter
